Our River Program

Through excursions to the surrounding rivers (Rio Grande, Chama, and the Arkansas) our Explorers are able to learn such river skills as rowing, kayaking, reading the currents, scouting and river hydrology, as well as basic camp skills and “Leave No Trace” ethics and practices. These skills are supplemented with training in swift water rescue and first aid. The ultimate goal is to learn by doing and to develop all the necessary skills and knowledge to someday be able to run a private white water river trip.

River skills are put to the ultimate test each year during one or two “Major” trips, which are anywhere from 5-21 days in duration, and take place on some of the most famous rivers in the West. In the past we’ve run the Salmon river, the Green, and the mighty Colorado!

By the time our Explorers graduate from high school they have become seasoned “boatmen”. Many of the Post Alumni over its ~ 50 years of existence have gone on to work as professional river guides, Outward Bound Instructors, and even had first descents credited to them all because of the skills and knowledge they obtained while being a part of Explorer Post 20.
